Workplace Charging Scheme

The Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS) is a voucher-based government grant that covers 75% of the purchase and installation cost of EV chargepoints — up to £500 per socket. Eligible businesses can claim up to 40 sockets per applicant and must have dedicated off-street parking available for staff or fleet use.

What EV charger types are available for commercial properties?

For commercial installations, the main options are AC Type 2 chargers (7kW per bay — standard for workplace and car park use), DC rapid chargers (50kW+ — suited to high-dwell destinations such as retail and hospitality), and smart tethered units with a fixed cable for ease of use. Most commercial car park installations use AC Type 2 units managed via a smart platform such as Monta or Rolec's management system.

Does my site need three-phase power for EV charging?

For two or three chargers, a single-phase supply can work. For four or more bays, three-phase is almost always the right choice — it gives you balanced load across phases, lower cable size requirements per circuit, and headroom for future expansion without a further supply upgrade. A site survey will confirm your existing supply capacity and whether an upgrade to the LV incomer is required.

Is OZEV grant funding available for my installation?

The Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS) provides up to £350 per socket (maximum 40 sockets) for eligible employers installing chargers at their workplace. The EV Infrastructure Grant supports eligible owner-occupied and leasehold commercial properties. Eligibility depends on property ownership type, use, and existing power supply. We assess eligibility during your free site survey and support the application process.

How long does a commercial EV installation take?

A typical commercial installation — supply assessment, civil groundworks, distribution kiosk, and charger install — runs two to three weeks from start to NICEIC certification. Sites requiring planning permission for external kiosks or significant civil works may take longer. Our Capitol Building, Bracknell installation (7 bays, 45m armoured cable run, full civil groundworks and block paving reinstatement) completed in under three weeks.

Does the car park need to close during installation?

In most cases, no. We phase the work to keep sections of the car park operational throughout. Open trenches are covered with hazard plates at all times. Charger bays are typically taken out of use one or two at a time for final connections and commissioning. The Capitol Building installation kept the KARIUM car park partially operational throughout the full programme.

What ongoing maintenance does an EV charger need?

Commercial chargers benefit from an annual electrical inspection and a firmware/software check to keep smart-charging features current. We offer maintenance plans that bundle this with your wider electrical compliance schedule, so it's one less thing to track separately.

Can you install EV chargers alongside our existing distribution board, or do we need an upgrade?

It depends on your site's spare capacity. During the free site survey we check your distribution board and incoming supply against the number and power rating of chargers you want — many sites can take several chargers with smart load management before any board upgrade is needed.

What warranty and support do you provide after installation?

All installations carry manufacturer warranty on the chargers themselves (typically 2-3 years depending on model) plus our own workmanship guarantee. We're also available for fault callouts and ongoing servicing once the install is live.

Will I receive certification once the installation is complete?

Yes — every installation is certified to BS 7671 and issued with the relevant electrical installation certificate, plus any documentation your OZEV grant claim requires. NICEIC approval means this paperwork is recognised by building control and insurers.

How is the cost of a commercial EV installation typically structured?

Costs scale with the number of chargers, the civil works needed to route power to the bays, and whether your distribution board needs upgrading. Your free site survey gives you a clear cost ballpark before you commit, broken down so you can see exactly what grant funding could offset.
