Seven pedestals. Fourteen charging sockets. A 250A dedicated distribution board and 49m of 150mm² SWA sub-main — infrastructure built to serve this car park for the next decade. BS 7671:2018+A3:2024 compliant, with independent cable calculations by Nicholas Owen Associates Ltd and an EIC certificate issued on completion.

Monta OCPP 1.6J smart charging platform with RFID and app control, dynamic load balancing, and remote monitoring. Ongoing management from day one — and a 180-page O&M manual handed to the client so the estates team can manage the installation for its entire operational life.

A Managed Estate Requiring Managed Charging

Capitol Building is managed by one of the country's leading commercial property practices. When the brief arrived to design and install a full EV charging infrastructure across the KARIUM car park, the requirement was straightforward: fourteen charge points, professionally installed and properly documented, with a smart charging platform configured from day one so the estates team would never be left managing an installation they didn't understand.

Before a single cable was ordered, Nexgen completed a full LV switchgear compliance check at the Capitol Building Main Switch Panel, commissioned independent cable calculations from Nicholas Owen Associates Ltd, and finalised RAMS documentation prior to mobilisation. Factory QA testing of the GRP feeder pillar and distribution equipment was completed before delivery to site. It is the kind of pre-construction discipline that turns a six-week programme into a six-week delivery.

From Basement Switchgear to Car Park Bay — Every Metre Engineered.

Delivering fourteen EV charging sockets to the KARIUM car park at Capitol Building required resolving a cable route from the building's basement Main Switch Panel to the rear car park — 49 metres of 150mm² SWA through three distinct environments, a bespoke Proteus GRP enclosure, and a Monta smart charging platform configured for this site. The result is a future-ready commercial EV infrastructure Nexgen would put its name to.

Site Survey & Design

LV switchgear compliance verified at existing Main Switch Panel. 150mm² SWA cable sizing independently calculated by Nicholas Owen Associates Ltd. Route survey across all three environments — car park, planted border, raised floor void.

49m Sub-Main Installation

150mm² SWA armoured cable pulled as a single continuous run: basement MSP to car park trench, through planted-border conduit, and internal raised floor void — no intermediate joints.

Proteus GRP Kiosk

Bespoke 250A TPN Proteus distribution kiosk crane-delivered and installed. DP isolator, SPD, and twelve-way distribution board wired. All seven EV charger circuits individually protected with MCB and RCBO.

Monta Smart Charging

Seven Rolec pedestals commissioned and enrolled on the Monta OCPP 1.6J platform. RFID and app control configured. Dynamic load balancing active. 3-year Rolec warranty registered and 180-page O&M manual delivered.

Civil Groundworks

Block paving lifted and set aside, cable trench excavated across the KARIUM car park, hazard covers installed throughout, and block paving fully reinstated with KARIUM EV green guide lines on completion.

Proteus GRP Distribution Kiosk

Bespoke 250A TPN Proteus kiosk crane-delivered — base prepared, kiosk positioned, DP isolator, SPD, and twelve-way distribution board installed and connected to the Capitol Building LV supply.

49m 150mm² SWA Sub-Main

49-metre 150mm² armoured cable in a single continuous run: car park trench from kiosk, conduit through planted border, and Capitol Building's internal raised floor void to charger distribution positions — no intermediate joints.

MCB & RCBO Protection

Individual MCB and RCBO protection installed for each of the seven charger circuits within the Proteus kiosk — ensuring individual fault protection for every charging bay.

Rolec Pedestal Installation

Seven Rolec pedestals installed at designated KARIUM bay positions, individually connected, tested, and commissioned. Fourteen charge points certified and live.

Monta OCPP 1.6J Platform

All seven chargers enrolled on the Monta OCPP 1.6J smart charging platform. RFID and app control configured, dynamic load balancing activated, remote monitoring live from day one.

EIC Testing & Commissioning

Full BS 7671:2018+A3:2024 testing of all seven EV charger circuits — insulation resistance, earth fault loop impedance, RCD operation, and protective conductor continuity verified with calibrated Megger test equipment. EIC certificate EIC-20260514-QPSS issued 15 May 2026.

Periodic Inspection & Testing

Commercial EV charging installations require periodic inspection and testing to maintain BS 7671 compliance and warranty validity. Nexgen offers scheduled periodic testing for all charger circuits — keeping the installation compliant, the Rolec warranty intact, and the property manager's duty of care covered.

Six Weeks on a Live Commercial Estate

The KARIUM car park remained partially open throughout the programme. Traffic management and safe working zones were established before groundworks began — cable trenches were protected with hazard covers, and charger bay positions were staked out and agreed with the building management team before any block paving was lifted. The estate continued to function around the programme.

The most technically demanding element was the sub-main cable run. Rather than introduce joints — which add potential failure points to an underground installation — Nexgen pulled 49 metres of 150mm² SWA armoured cable as a single continuous run: from the basement Main Switch Panel, through the planted border conduit, across the Capitol Building internal raised floor void, and into the Proteus GRP kiosk. O-PEN protection devices were installed at each charger position. Foundation bases, draw pits, and final circuit runs were completed to programme, with fire sealing at all penetrations before sign-off.

49m Sub-Main Route Through Three Distinct Environments

Challenge

Routing 150mm² SWA armoured cable from the Capitol Building basement Main Switch Panel to the rear car park required crossing three distinct environments — an open car park surface needing civil groundworks and full block-paving reinstatement, a narrow planted border requiring conduit through established planting, and the building's internal raised floor void. Each environment imposed different handling and fixings requirements for the heavy-gauge armoured cable.

Solution

Nexgen sequenced the installation to tackle each environment in turn. Civil groundworks and cable draw-in were completed as a single 49m continuous pull with no intermediate joints. Hazard covers protected open trenches throughout; the KARIUM car park remained partially operational at every stage. Block paving was fully reinstated on completion with green KARIUM guide lines at every EV bay.

Independent Engineering Sign-Off Before Procurement

Challenge

A commercial EV sub-main of this scale required independent confirmation of cable sizing before any materials were ordered. Commissioning a third-party cable calculation report added time to the pre-construction phase that had to be managed within a fixed programme.

Solution

Independent cable calculations were commissioned from Nicholas Owen Associates Ltd before procurement. The report confirmed 150mm² SWA for the 49m run. Factory QA testing of the Proteus GRP kiosk and distribution equipment was completed before delivery to site — so commissioning ran to programme without last-minute substitutions or delays.

Smart Charging Platform Onboarding on a Managed Estate

Challenge

Enrolling seven chargers on the Monta OCPP 1.6J platform — with RFID access controls, dynamic load balancing, and remote monitoring — needed to be co-ordinated as part of the commissioning sequence on a live managed estate, without extending the programme.

Solution

Monta onboarding was completed in the same session as EIC testing. All seven chargers were enrolled, RFID access configured, and dynamic load balancing activated before the estate was handed back. The property management team received a 180-page O&M manual covering every circuit, every setting, and every maintenance requirement.
